The Urban Analytics Framework (UAF) is designed to provide an analytical evaluation of the quality of shared spaces for both road traffic and pedestrian users.

UAF is a ground breaking new microsimulation software that combines Quadstone Paramics award winning traffic microsimulation capabilities with a fully featured free space agent model. The free space agent model allows agents, the term used for our simulated people, to move freely within the constraints of their defined space. Unlike a traditional traffic model the free space model has no links/lane/node etc. that dictate the agents movement.

The UAF is a flexible tool built on solid analytics providing data that shows how to improve urban space; presentation and 3D graphics take second place to well defined modelling concepts and a tried and tested evaluation methodology which allows the user to clearly identify problem areas in the urban space.

The UAF provides a comprehensive set of tools to model the interaction between vehicles and pedestrians. Walk signals, interrupted right turns, pedestrian priority crossings, and call-on-demand crossings can all be modelled in a flexible way. The UAF is a 100% run time application: there is no post processing or generation of data files from one side of the simulation to be imported into another. In the UAF we consider vehicles and agents interacting in a single environment at the same time.

The UAF is designed to be a decision support analysis tool, its graphics front end and analytical displays have been specifically designed to perform this role. The UAF uses many industry standard Measure of Effectiveness (MOE) criteria such as Level of Service (LOS) to aid user understanding. In addition the UAF provides a high end 3D rendering engine for real time life like movie capture and movie storyboarding.

The UAF provides a fully featured Spatial Analysis (SA) tool. Once we have defined free space areas and the demand regions or spawn points where agents will enter and exit the space, the SA tool generates a colour coded map to highlight those areas of the space which are most likely to have conflict issues. The SA tool is invaluable in performing this early stage “no data” value engineering.

Individual agent metrics can be represented in the UAF in a number of ways. The Agent Metrics tool allows us to colour code agents based on Level Of Service (LOS) style bandings while the Agent tracer lets us collect trajectory and historical metric information and trace multiple agents as they move through the free space.

Spatial Metrics Tools are the most powerful tools available in the UAF. Spatial Metrics Tools record the footsteps of each agent as they move through the free space recording the agents “experience” and how the space dictates their quality of service. The Spatial Metrics Tool can be used to create coloured maps of complex spatial data including agent speed, density, delay, and space utilisation each of which can be used to examine causality for collisions and Level of Service for pedestrian movement.

Identification of safety issues is the number one goal of the UAF. We allow agents to become frustrated at crosswalks, to ignore the “don’t walk” signal, to take opportunist gaps and to cross between traffic flows should they think it is safe to do so. In addition we model both the vehicle and agent’s field of view, vehicle stopping abilities and the difference between aggressive and courteous drivers interaction with agents. These quantitative measures allow us to define causality which in turn lets the UAF provide informed and accurate feedback on safety issues to urban space designers.
